Henry Blackaby’s Experiencing God has been around for 40 years and it still impacts my life. While reading it, I was challenged to write a prayer using the list of names, titles, and descriptions of God it contained. Each time I pray that prayer, I am moved anew by the greatness of our God. Truly he is our everything. When I think about God’s promise to be with me “until the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20), I am assured it is true simply because of who he is. I’d like to share my prayer with you below. I suggest you read it aloud.
God, you are so faithful to my needs. You are always there to forgive me when I fail. You are the fortress of my salvation and my glorious crown in Heaven. My master in Heaven, I know you are a jealous and avenging God, and yet you are a refuge when I am in need; a sanctuary where I can take shade from the heat and shelter from the storm. You are my source of strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble. You are the architect and builder of all that is seen and unseen, the commander of Heaven and earth. Eternal king and father of compassion, you are the defender of widows and father to the fatherless. You are the father of our spirits and of the heavenly lights. Most high God, you are almighty, my maker, my rock, my Savior, my stronghold.
God and Father of my Lord Jesus Christ; God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; God of all mankind, you are God of gods. God of glory, grace, hope, love, peace, truth, retribution—you are God of the living. You are God of the spirits of all mankind and God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You are God who avenges me, who gives me endurance and encouragement, and who relents from sending calamity. You are the great and awesome God, the mighty and powerful God. You are the God who blots out my transgressions and who comforts me. You are the one who forms the hearts of all; who raised Christ from the dead; who reveals his thoughts to man. You are able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine. You are able to keep me from falling.
Holy Father, I know you are ready to judge the living and the dead; you are the holy one among us; the great I AM. You have said you are I AM WHO I AM and I know you are the jealous judge of all the earth. You are the King of glory; the King of Heaven; the living and true God. Lord God Almighty, my Adonai, my Jehovah, you are my banner. Lord of Heaven and earth; you are Lord of Kings. You are my shield and my healer. Lord, you are always there to make me holy or to strike the blow; you are my provider. Lord of love, you are maker of all things; maker of Heaven and earth. You are my advocate, my comforter in sorrow, my confidence, my help, my helper, my hiding place, my light, my mighty rock, my refuge in the day of disaster. You are my refuge in times of trouble, my song, my strong deliverer, and my support. Oh, one who is to be feared, the only wise God, you are my dwelling place. You are my judge, my lawgiver, my leader, the mighty one, my redeemer, my righteous father. O Sovereign Lord, you are the rock of my salvation. O compassionate and gracious God, you are my shepherd. Eternal God, you are a consuming fire. Everlasting God, you are exalted. Glorious Father, you are my husbandman. You are the Glory of Israel; the God who sees me and saves me. You are the great King above all gods; the just and mighty one; the living Father. You are the majestic glory; the majesty in Heaven. You are the only God; the one who sustains me. You are the potter; the spring of living water; the strength of my heart. You are the true God who hears my prayers and judges righteously. You test the heart and mind and keep your covenant of love with your servants. You love the people. You are my glory, my praise, and my very great reward.
Amen.
