Second Kings 4 contains a fascinating account of the faith of a woman known only as “the Shunammite.” She and her husband provided lodging for the prophet Elijah when his travels brought him near their home.

One day Elijah prophesied that the Shunammite and her husband, though childless, would conceive and have a son. The prophet’s words came true and a child was born to the couple.

The years passed. One day the child became sick while working with his father in the fields. He was carried to his mother and died on her lap.

This woman of faith responded in a remarkable way. She didn’t take time to mourn her loss. She laid her dead child on the bed in the room where Elijah stayed and left immediately to find the prophet. Her husband, apparently unware of their son’s death, asked his wife, “Why go to him today? It’s not the New Moon or the Sabbath.”

The woman replied, “That’s all right.”

Elijah saw her in the distance and sent his servant Gehazi to ask her, “Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Is your child all right?”

The woman replied, “Everything is all right.”

There’s more to the story but in the end, God restored the Shunammite’s son to life. When the prophet presented the risen son to his mother, the woman fell down before Elijah in gratitude.

It’s an amazing miracle, and the woman’s faith is equally amazing. At no time during the event does she appear to doubt that everything will be “all right.”

I seek the same kind of faith. A faith that says no matter how difficult or discouraging the situation, as I trust in God, everything will be all right. I may not get what I hope for, but I won’t doubt that God is for me and always has my best interests at heart.

With God on your side, it will always be “all right.”
