Once while vacationing in Jamaica, I had the wonderful opportunity to meet an elderly couple, 82 years old, from New Jersey. Each morning they were on the beach early, eager to soak up every possible minute of waves and sun. As we chatted about life, their retirement, and places they had visited, they brought to my attention that they had only been traveling for three years. This was a bit late in life, I suggested.
They said that one night while sitting on their front porch, they had a sudden realization that their children were well prepared for life. Their children had inherited from them an excellent work ethic, developed a sound foundation of values and morals, plus a strong understanding of the Christian doctrine. They certainly were capable of handling tomorrow. So the husband and wife said why not? They decided to start traveling and enjoying what they had worked so hard to accumulate.
Spiritual Fitness
We should thank God daily for giving us strength to maintain a level of spiritual fitness so that we are capable of passing on the plan of salvation. Maintaining this level of spiritual well-being takes a daily workout plan to keep us spiritually on track with God’s will. Conditioning our thought process in accord to his Word, we can live with a sound spiritual understanding. This will provide us with strong morals and happiness.
“The Father . . . has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light” (Colossians 1:12).
The Best Inheritance
Most importantly, the one item we should desire others to inherit from us is God’s wisdom. Earthly inheritance will certainly enable us to have a more comfortable life, often allowing us to reduce our stress level and increase our financial stability. But wisdom preserves life!
“Wisdom, like an inheritance, is a good thing and benefits those who see the sun. Wisdom is a shelter as money is a shelter, but the advantage of knowledge is this: Wisdom preserves those who have it” (Ecclesiastes 7:11, 12).
