I come from a family of strong women. I’m very blessed to have so many role models in and around my family tree.
Grandmothers
For a time, there were five generations of females living on my mom’s side (see photo). My great-grandmother raised five children and held down the household while her husband was away on hunting expeditions. She lived until she was 94. I recall her small stature and quiet voice, but we listened when she spoke.
Her daughter, my Gran, has been a home economics teacher, a part-time farmer, and an interior decorator by hobby. She has battled enough medical issues to level a person. Yet despite all she’s faced, including entering widowhood just a few months ago, she has pressed on.
We teased my other grandmother for never being short on opinions. But she was also never short on love. Though she passed away, her determined spirit still stirs in our hearts.
Aunts
My great-aunt, though not a mother herself, has been an amazing motherly figure. I watched her care for her mother until she passed away. She’s an encourager, a comforter, and a source of fun for us all.
I have two aunts and also a dear friend who has become like family. These strong women have no children of their own but have lavished love onto the children (and adults!) in their lives. Their camaraderie, support, and unfailing love has made a difference in my life. I’m thankful my daughter has them to look up to as well.
Mother-in-Law
I married a guy who has a pretty amazing mother. I cannot thank her enough for raising her kids to love the Lord and for praying for them daily. (Also she taught them to choose well when picking spouses!)
She has a servant’s heart and an unquenchable spirit to work hard for the Lord. She always desires to remain in God’s Word and to teach children to love him.
Mom
I’ve saved the best for last. My mom is beyond words. I couldn’t imagine a better person to emulate as a mom and as a woman of God.
She sees the best in others. She loves my dad, her kids, her granddaughter, and her own parents with a sacrificial love. She gives all her mental and physical energy to make everyone else’s life more joyful.
My mom stayed at home for years and then worked for years. She and my dad always took us to church and were youth group leaders. She sat through every sporting event and church or school program I ever had.
In adulthood we’ve had a wonderfully close relationship. I can’t thank God enough for that. I love going places with her, trying new things with her, and laughing until I cry with her.
All the Rest
There’s no room to testify about my sisters-in-law and friends who also rock as moms and those who aren’t moms but still rock. So I’ll simply say Happy Mother’s Day to all the strong women in my life. I lean on and learn from you. (I hope this article reminds you of all the strong women in your life. Thank them today!)
