Think of a time when someone you love broke the news that they were soon going to leave (moving, divorcing, dying). What words describe your emotions?
Read John 14:15-26.
In this passage, Jesus was breaking the news to his disciples that he soon was leaving. In what ways did he try to encourage them?
What words are used to describe the Holy Spirit? (Tip: Look at other Bible versions for how they translate advocate.) What do these descriptions reveal?
What does this passage teach about what the Holy Spirit does?
“On that day” (v. 20) refers either to the resurrection or the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2). What did Jesus’ disciples eventually realize on those days about God’s plan, presence, power, and purpose?
How do you see love, obedience, and the working of the Holy Spirit operating together in your life?
This week pay attention to Jesus’ presence through the Holy Spirit. End in prayer, asking God to make his presence, power, and purpose very real to each of you.
