Devotional thoughts on Romans 8:28-39

By Mike Berry

A few years ago, I was suddenly fired from the church I had been serving with for almost 2 years. It stung. It was embarrassing. Most firings are. The church was in a transition, and my philosophy was a bit different than theirs, so it was clear that we needed to part ways.

In the days that followed, I spent a lot of time thinking and praying. To be honest, I fought back the urge to blow up, rant on social media, expose every dark secret of the church, you name it. I especially fumed over the untrue things that were said to me when I was let go. My flesh was in serious combat with the Holy Spirit.

Looking for Answers

For weeks I battled, I prayed, I felt hopeless. I wrestled and looked for answers. And then, on one unassuming day, the words of Romans 8:31-37 appeared in a blog post I was reading: “What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? . . . Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? . . . No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us” (New Living Translation).

Nothing Can Separate

Nothing that anyone can do to me or you will ever separate us from the most important thing in the world—Christ’s love for us. In your darkest hour remember that you are more than a conqueror in Jesus. Let it fill you with hope. Let it give you strength.
