1. Who taught you how to pray? What did this person teach you, by words and by modeling?

Read Luke 18:9-14.

2. What is your initial reaction to the Pharisee in the story?

• I’d like to punch him in the nose!

• I agree with him. He probably worked hard to become so religious. He should brag on himself a little.

• I feel like putting him in his place.

• I feel pity for him.

• Other: _________.

3. What is your initial reaction to the tax collector?

• I admire him. At least he’s honest.

• He seems to be more aware of who he is than the Pharisee.

• I can relate to this guy because . . .

• After cheating people out of their money, he has a lot of nerve even being here!

• Other: _________.

4. If both of these men showed up at your church, how do you think each would be received? If each one showed up to your small group, how would each be received?

5. Jesus ended this parable with an important kingdom principle. What example can you give of individuals (yourself included) who exalted themselves and were humbled or who humbled themselves and were exalted?

6. What principles for how people pray publically can you discern from this passage?

7. What principles or right attitudes from this passage will you apply as you spend time with God in prayer this week?
